We are a UK-wide charity acting for sustainable, prosperous UK fisheries.

Built and guided by fishermen, for fishermen, we seek to create and realise innovative real-world solutions for a complex industry.

We support people in the fishing industry to engage with fisheries science, management and sustainable business practices, placing their entrepreneurial spirit, practical experience and commitment to a sustainable future at the heart of all we do.

Fishing into the Future was established as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) in January 2015 with a UK-wide remit to seek innovative and practical ways to achieve sustainable and prosperous UK fisheries.

We started life as a strategic partnership between the Prince of Wales’ Charities International Sustainability Unit (ISU), the industry body Seafish, and the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) – a world-leading institute specialising in participatory processes.

This group – supported by funding from different bodies – convened a ground-breaking workshop in Brixham in the summer of 2013. The outcomes of this meeting stand as testament to the vision of the original partners, and still provide the cornerstone of our priorities for action today. 

We are unique in the UK –  neither a fishermen’s association nor organisation, we are a collaborative venture, with a wider constituency of supporters. The people actively working in the fishing industry are central to all that we do,  and all those involved in the charity come as individuals who share our vision and have no other agenda.

Placing fishermen at the helm, our team of trustees unites the industry, scientists, managers, and economists – all of whom are committed to delivering sustainable and prosperous fisheries, through innovative and influential projects.  

We aim to be a leading example of how the creativity and expertise of fishermen – together with like-minded stakeholders – can be harnessed to improve how science and management is approached within the marine environment.

We envisage a future where fishermen not only work alongside others to find long-lasting industry solutions, but they are in fact a crucial part of the overall process.

We deliver projects around the UK, and work collaboratively with the key agencies in the Devolved Administrations. We look to test concepts at the local level, as well as nationally. We have a UK-wide remit, but our offices are based at Fishmongers’ Hall at London Bridge.
